Double Strollers - side by side or inline tandem, the choices are immense!

The Double Stroller is a firm favourite in many parents eyes being practical and with advancements in technology no longer difficult to push around town or the countryside. But this in mind there are many parents whom I speak with and overhear whom still ask whether this is the right stroller for them especially parents with twins or siblings close in age. Some of the more common comments I hear are;

There are some great questions here and very valid ones indeed. Lets begin by addressing the reasons why parents are looking for a Double Stroller. For the most part, parents with two children whom are either twins or relatively close in age begin to think that there must be a better way of transporting their children than two separate strollers and thankfully there now are many models of double strollers available.

This fits nicely with one of the above questions;

"When should you use a side by side Double Stroller?"

As I mentioned above there are principally two main forms of Double Stroller. The side by side stroller and the inline or tandem stroller both of which serve different parenting needs. Lets first look at the differences between a tandem double stroller and it's side by side counterpart;

Tandem Double Stroller vs. Inline or Side by Side Double Stroller

This inline stroller is particularly light and narrow compared to its side by side counterpart. A further benefit of the Tandem models are that you generally can fit it between isles in the mall or within tight spaces. This is in contrast to the tandem stroller which is far wider and I have certainly experienced issues when I owned one getting around the narrow isles.

Another aspect vs. the two types is the manoeuvrability of the Tandem double stroller which I find to be rather restricted and cumbersome. If you consider the overall length of the stroller it is no wonder that a wide turning circle is required and the weight of the stroller also adds to the effort required to push effectively. If we are looking for a winner here I personally would suggest the side by side double stroller over that of the tandem for ease of use, lighter weight and storage (the side by side takes up much less length when folded).

Ok, so if you are sold upon a double stroller which one do you choose for your children and your needs? which leads me onto a very common question I get frequently which is;

"What double stroller is best for a 12 month old and a newborn?"

There are certainly many models capable of accommodating children of 1 year and newborn child including Phil and Ted, Graco Double Strollers and Double Stroller by Maclaren. The requirements to consider when purchasing for these age groups are very much down to your particular needs and requirements but do bear in mind that you will be using your double stroller a lot so ensure you can manoeuvre it easily and most importantly make sure you can dismantle it and load it into your trunk by yourself.
