You have heard of them but what is a Jogging Stroller and what are the best jogging strollers for runners?

Jogging StrollerFor moms and dads whom like to keep fit a Jogging Stroller is an ideal choice to keep trim whilst pushing your baby in the great outdoors. These ingenious travel systems have been designed from the ground up to specifically cater for the energetic moms especially those whom like to get their bodies back into shape following the birth of their children.

Many questions I get asked specifically around the running or jogging stroller are;

Is the Bob the best double jogging stroller?
What is a Jogging Stroller?

What is the best jogging stroller?
What is the best jogging stroller for the beach?

There are certainly some good questions here around the features and usage of the Jogging Stroller and I will do my best to answer them.

Running StrollerFirstly, an important consideration is the first question here;

"How old must an infant be to ride in a Jogging Stroller?"

The majority of manufacturers state that babies or infants should be at least 6 months of age before being introduced to running strollers. This is really common sense given your child needs to be able to support his or her head before they are able to cope with the sometimes more bumpy and energetic ride offered by a jogging stroller. You also need to consider that young babies will not be able to regulate their body temperature at an early age which is why you should always wrap them up warm and in the early days, close to your body.

Some jogging strollers now come with suitable baby cocoons but in my mind you should allow the baby to be over 6 months of age before attempting this. This brings me nicely onto the second associated question;

"Is it safe for a baby to ride in a Jogging Stroller?"

The simple answer is yes. If you ensure you abide by the above statement regarding the age of your child and the neck being supported by themselves, it is more than safe to utilise these types of fitness strollers for both your own benefit and importantly, your child's enjoyment.

So, we have looked at what a Jogging Stroller is, and the safety considerations which we must be mindful of when thinking about purchasing one. But lets say that you have already taken the plunge and purchased a Jogging Stroller, which brings me onto some further questions;

"How do you run, or do you saunter, power walk, or jog with the stroller?

The consensus here seems to be all of these. The strollers themselves are very much designed to cater for all levels of fitness whether you are simply wanting to just take a power walk through to those whom wish to run at pace with the stroller (running with a jogging stroller burns a lot of calories!). Given their robust design and strength they are very versatile and can accommodate all styles and levels of fitness.

Another common question I hear very frequently is the difference between the jogging stroller and all terrain systems given they look quite similar therefore the question;

"What is the difference between a jogging stroller and an all terrain stroller?"

Is a very valid one. The principle difference between the two strollers are that jogging strollers (the majority) have a fixed front wheel to enable them to be easily pushed at a higher speed than traditional strollers. An all terrain stroller however will have a swivel front wheel allowing it to be much more manoeuvrable than its running counterpart and offering a very different approach to strollers.

I hope the above information around Jogging Strollers helps you in your choices, features and safety aspects of the stroller which is right for your needs. Whenever you are thinking of purchasing a stroller do ensure that it is certified to the ATSM certified jogging stroller standards which provides you with confidence the item is tested and meets the needs to which it serves.
